Prototype of MF Softboard Kumafish (Interview: Mr. KUMA)

We asked shaper Mr. Kumagai directly about the story behind the creation of the MF/KUMA fish, which is loved around the world.
Mr. Kuma: Original Interview
Mr. Kuma: The first fishboard I made was a retro-style board with a vee concave on the deck surface, and it had a huge volume. The fins that were set were also called keel fins and had a wide base and a large fin.
Mr. Kuma: The speed was extremely fast, but it was hard to make vertical turns, so I removed the Vee concave on the deck, made the rail flat around the chest area, but made the rail like a short board to reduce the volume, and made the tail thinner.
Mr. Kuma] The rail, volume, and tail changes made the turns much easier, but one of our Australian customers told us, “
I think it would be even better if you made the center concave a single concave.
I think it would be even better if I changed the center concave to a single concave. (It was originally a Vee concave from nose to tail), so I did as he said and changed the bottom concave! (It was like going from turbo to twin turbo in a car.)

Deck
The flat deck provides buoyancy and a stable paddle for incredibly fast takeoffs in waves with little power.
The outline with volume closer to the nose allows for a smooth paddle start even in bad waves, such as small or choppy waves with no power.
The wave catch is good, so even in fast waves, you can take off easily by pushing, so there is no need to lose your balance in a hurry.
Concave
The concave is the source of KUMA Fish’s nimble speed. The exquisite and delicate technique, which is neither too deep nor too shallow, has won the admiration of Mick Fanning.
[Mr. KUMA] The KUMA fish starts with a small Vee in the nose, a single concave in the center, and a fairly strong Vee in the tail with a slight double concave.
[Surf food] The vee on the nose is a little, but this speeds up the takeoff. The depth of the soft board and the concave seem to be slightly different, but are they the same?

Fin setting
My friend and I immediately noticed that the fin position of the Kuma Fish seems to be placed a little closer to the tail than the normal fin setting. Please tell us why you chose to place the fins closer to the tail and what effect it has.
Mr. Kuma】After experimenting with various fin positions, I found it easier to ride the Kuma Fish with the fins positioned closer to the tail.

The fins certainly had excellent maneuverability when the back foot was placed on the kick tail, and the loose feeling characteristic of twin fins was reduced. I was able to enjoy nimble carving turns with a drive similar to that of a performance board.

【Mr. Kuma】 It is to prevent the nose of the board from getting stuck in waves, even if the board is short like a fish board and the waves break fast, and to make the take-off faster by making the paddle closer to the front of the board.
It is true that I was able to ride it out of the swell even in a wave that was digging, so it didn’t sting. Even in a thick wave with no power, I was able to ride it out quickly and even wait for the lip to stick out with the pushing. I could feel it accelerate as I stepped on the nose after riding it.

【Surf Meshi】Could you tell us the difference between the “MF Softboard Kuma Fish” and the “Original PU Kuma Fish Surfboard”?
【Mr. Kuma】The hardboard and softboard look basically the same, but the softboard is made of EPS board wrapped with 5mm sponge, so it is thicker overall, especially in the nose and tail.
The base of “MF Kuma Fish” is an EPS Kuma Fish board, but with 5mm IXPEFOAM soft top on the deck and 4mm HDPE FOAM on the bottom, the thickness and width of the rails and the overall volume is much larger than “PU Kuma Fish Surfboard”. 【Mr. KUMA】What I felt was that the MF soft board had a 5mm sponge wrapped around the EPS board, so I thought the volume was the most different.
The first MF Kumafish I rode was a 5’6”x20’1/16”x2’3/8” 29.52 liter black KUMA fish that Mick Fanning test rode in a design contest.
I surfed shoulder-sized beach waves, but they were too bulky to duck dive the board. However, due to the volume, the takeoff was earlier than the same 5’6″.
I felt that the rotation was more fluffy than PU because the rail did not enter. Personally, I felt that “MF soft board / KUMA fish” can be enjoyed more in small waves than in large waves.

When the fish arrived I was very impressed with the way it looks and the finish on it, loved how the colour turned out.
At first I was bit concerned about the low rocker on the nose is, but since than had quite a few amazing surfs on it and changed my mind about what good looks like.
The build and lightness, heavy glazing, feels really good and no impressions at all. I have put a set of power twins in it and love how is feels. Direct and controlled but loose enough to throw it around and def fast. Not sure if I would ever try keels. [Mr. KUMA] The relationship between myself and Mick Fanning (Mr. Mick) started in 2005 when I started working at the DHD factory and met Mick for the first time. And from around 2009, I got the chance to do Mick’s personal sander.
